Emily Sugihara launched Baggu with her mom Joan shortly after graduating from college. The idea was to create a reusable shopping bag that was cute and more than just your standard cotton tote. She succeeded and the Standard Baggu, a nylon shoulder bag that comes with and fits in a 5″ by 5″ pouch, was born.

When she decided to become her own boss in 2007, 24-year-old Sugihara partnered with her mother, Joan, to start Baggu and bring their forward-thinking, design-centric, Japan-influenced bag to market. The Standard Baggu (Japanese for “bag”) remains the brand’s best-selling product 10 years later.

We phased leather out of our product line in Fall 2020. BAGGU made leather accessories for several years and we liked that it was a durable, natural material. However, as we grew in size, we spent more time researching the full impact of our leather program.
