Veldskoene (“FELT-skoona”) or colloquially vellies (“FELL-ys”), are South African walking shoes made from vegetable-tanned leather or soft rawhide uppers attached to a leather footbed and rubber sole without tacks or nails.

How do you clean Vellies shoes?

Dampen a microfibre cloth with warm water, and wipe over the affected area in circular motions. Don’t use and soaps or products that aren’t recommended for suede. Do not pour water on the shoe, the water from the cloth will be enough. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe the soles of your vellies.

Do you wear socks with Vellies?

When purchasing a pair of Vellies, rather size down instead of up. Leather can stretch and mould to your foot. If they feel too small, soak them in cold water for about 5 seconds, then put on 2 pairs of socks and wear them for an hour or two.

You will notice that the leather will stretch around the bridge of your foot as soon as a few hours into wearing your shoes.

Can I wash Vellies?

If you want your VELDSKOEN® to age beautifully, we suggest you don’t wash them in the washing machine. If you wash them by hand, in any of the ways mentioned above, your ‘velle’ will keep their character and the cow-hide leather will keep better and for longer.

Can you put dubbin on Vellies?

Try not to use Dubbin on our Vellies, as we have found it to have a chemical reaction on the stitching on some occasions. Do not tug on the loops at the back of the shoe, they are added as a visual element and not for assistance in pulling on the shoe.

Is dubbin good for leather walking boots?

Dubbin is great for leather boots, but not for suede or nubuck materials. Never use dubbin on suede or nubuck leather, as these types of material can be damaged by the oily nature of dubbing wax. You might even cause them irreparable damage (you have been warned!).
