What is being Floxed?
Many of them describe a devastating and progressive condition, encompassing symptoms ranging from psychiatric and sensory disturbances to problems with muscles, tendons and nerves that continue after people have stopped taking the drugs. They call it being ‘floxed’.
Does moxifloxacin cause anxiety?
One of these reactions is anxiety, a rare side effect of fluoroquinolones generally and moxifloxacin specifically. In patients taking moxifloxacin, anxiety occurs at a rate of only 0.1% to 2%. The mechanism by which the fluoroquinolones cause CNS disturbances such as anxiety is not fully understood.

But fluoroquinolones are essential last-resort antibiotics for severe infections. That’s why most of them are still on the market: Avelox (moxifloxacin), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Factive (gemifloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin) and generic ofloxacin.

Is Avelox safe?
Avelox belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Avelox can cause serious side effects that can happen at the same time and could result in death. If you get any of the following serious side effects, you should stop taking Avelox and get medical help right away.
Can antibiotics cause mental confusion?
Antibiotics can lead to disruption in brain function, that causes mental confusion accompanied by hallucinations and agitation.
Can antibiotics make you psychotic?
The antibiotics showing increased odds of psychosis are from various drug classes including penicillins, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and aminoglycosides. Those antibiotics with the greatest increased odds of psychosis were macrolides, fluoroquinolones and metronidazole.
Is Avelox a sulfa drug?
Yes. Moxifloxacin is in an entirely different drug class that is NOT structurally similar to sulfa antibiotics.
